چکیده

This research makes use of a large sample of individual telephone calls between local exchanges (cities, towns, villages) within a U.S. region. The interlocational flows, measured in conversation seconds, are analyzed by estimating, in a simultaneous equation framework, spatial interaction models that account for (1) the role of the spatial structure, which reflects the competition and agglomeration effects that take place among the flow destinations, and (2) the role of the reverse flows, which reflect the process of information creation necessary to complete economic and social transactions. A particular focus is set on Fotheringham’s competing destinations model and Stouffer’s intervening opportunities model. The implications of the results are discussed and areas for further research are outlined. JEL classification: L96, R1, R4, R12, R15

Modeling interregional commodity flows with incorporating network autocorrelation in spatial interaction models: An application of the US interstate commodity flows

Spatial interaction models are frequently used to predict and explain interregional commodity flows. Studies suggest that the effects of spatial structure significantly influence spatial interaction models, often resulting in model misspecification. Competing destinations and intervening opportunities have been used to mitigate this issue. Some recent studies also show that the effects of spati...

Diego Department of Economics Intervening Opportunities , Competing Searchers , and the Intra - Metropolitan Flow of Male Youth Labor

This paper analyzes the determinants of the journey-to-work commute patterns for male teenage workers within a single local labor market: the Oakland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area. Controlling for the intervening opportunities and the intervening labor supply between a given origin and destination reduces the estimated negative effect of distance on the inter-zonal flow of labor by near...

An empirically based implementation and evaluation of a network model for commuting flows

In this paper we present empirical results based on a network model for commuting flows. The model is a modified version of a construction introduced in Thorsen et al. (1999). Journeys-to-work are determined by distance deterrence effects, the effects of intervening opportunities, and the location of potential destinations relative to alternatives at subsequent steps in the transportation netwo...

AREAS , NODES AND NETWORKS : Some Analytical Considerations

In spatial interaction modelling, trips between origins and destinations within the same areal zone have a predominant influence on both the value of the gravity parameter and on the associated pattern of flows. Despite this, the relevant highly sensitive intrazonal impedance values are usually based on approximate average intrazonal distances or times. This situation has been identified in the...

Urban gravity: a model for inter-city telecommunication flows

We analyze the anonymous communication patterns of 2.5 million customers of a Belgian mobile phone operator. Grouping customers by billing address, we build a social network of cities that consists of communications between 571 cities in Belgium. We show that inter-city communication intensity is characterized by a gravity model: the communication intensity between two cities is proportional to...
